2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic odds, picks, field: Surprising predictions by golf model that's called 13 majors

Tom Kim will be the player to watch at the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Challenge, which tees off Thursday at Detroit Golf Club. Kim is coming off of a solo second finish at the Travelers Championship where he was narrowly edged by Scottie Scheffler in a playoff. The world No. 1 is one of the many big-name golfers taking the week off, so there will be an extra spotlight on Kim at the Rocket Mortgage Challenge. Cameron Young, who is still looking for his first win of the season, is listed next at 14-1 odds, followed by Min Woo Lee and Akshay Bhatia each at 20-1 odds. Top 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic predictions 

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic: Young (14-1), who's among the top favorites this week at 14-1, stumbles and doesn't even crack the top 10. The 27-year-old American shot a 59 in the third round of the Travelers Championship, which was just the 13th sub-60 round in PGA Tour history. He started the day 11 shots back of the lead, but that round allowed him to ultimately post a top-10 finish.

However, Young finished outside the top 30 in his previous six tournaments, missing the cut at the RBC Canadian Open while finishing T-62 at the RBC Heritage and T-67 at the U.S. Open. He is still seeking his first career PGA Tour victory after posting seven runner-up finishes. Young ranks 102nd on the PGA Tour in scoring average, making him a golfer to fade this week despite his historic third round at the Travelers Championship. See who else to fade here.

Another surprise: Taylor Pendrith, a 40-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The 33-year-old Canadian won the CJ Cup Byron Nelson back in May, and is coming off of a very impressive showing at the Travelers Championship where he sank a 13-foot birdie putt and shot 65 in the opening round to finish T23 on the weekend.

Pendrith's current form should make sinking putts at Detroit Golf Club look easy. The flat course features some difficult green surfaces, which Pendrith should have no trouble navigating since he ranks fourth on the PGA Tour in strokes gained: putting (0.714), fifth in putting average (1.710) and 14th in one-putt percentage (43.38%). See who else to back here.
