Blues lock away another important cog
Carlton’s list boss says Blake Acres’ composure in high-pressure moments has helped him earn a two-year contract extension through to the end of 2027.
The important wingman appears set to finish his career at his third club after playing 39 of a possible 40 games for the Blues since crossing from Fremantle last season.
Acres, 28, has continued the consistent form of his first season at Ikon Park and was among the Blues’ best in their demolition of Geelong with 24 disposals, eight marks and a goal on Saturday night.
He produced a stunning performance in Carlton’s breakthrough elimination final win over Sydney last year with two last-line saves and a crucial late goal of his own.
Carlton head of list management Nick Austin said the new deal was a just reward for Acres’ performances.

“Blake is a talented and reliable player, his ability to have an impact on play at both ends of the ground is a real asset for the side,” Austin said.
“He shows a great amount of composure in high-pressure moments. He knows what’s expected of him and he consistently executes his role for the team.
“Embracing roles in the side has become something the playing group prides themselves on and Blake has really led the way in that regard.”
The new deal for Acres came as the Western Bulldogs re-signed small forward Rhylee West on a two-year contract following his breakout four-goal performance against Fremantle in his 50th game last week.
The 23-year-old son of club great Scott West said it was “exciting” to know he had a future at Whitten Oval.
Taken with pick 26 in the 2018 draft, West is on track to play his most games ever in a season and already has a career-high 17 goals in 2024.
“I’m happy to be here at this footy club. Since I got here six years ago, the group has been very tight. I’ve grown with this group, and also seen them grow too,” West said.
“Reflecting on my journey so far, it’s obviously been a bit of a longer one – getting to 50 games – but I’m definitely grateful for how it has turned out.
“Without those challenges, I wouldn’t be where I am now.”
