Work on footbridge over major road to begin

Work to build a new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists is starting this month as part of a scheme to improve a busy junction.
The footbridge will provide a safe route across the A19 in County Durham, which currently severs National Cycle Route 1, Durham County Council says.
It is part of a £13.5m scheme to improve the junction between the A19 and the A182, and expand Jade Business Park near Murton.
A number of overnight closures will be in place from 18 May until 10 June to allow for the work to be carried out.
The improvements, delivered by the council, will increase capacity at the junction and at Dalton Park signals, and allow for an extra 46,500 sq m (500,000 sq ft) of commercial space to be created, as well as 2,000 more jobs.
The council’s cabinet member for economy and partnerships, Elizabeth Scott, said the scheme would allow a “key employment site” to grow sustainably.
“The introduction of a footbridge at this location will help to encourage sustainable forms of travel, both in terms of long-distance leisure rides along National Cycle Route 1 and by providing environmentally friendly and affordable ways for local residents to commute to Jade Business Park,” she said.
Overnight closures will be in place from 18 May while work is under way
The scheme will also see the two existing roundabouts at either side of the A182 removed and replaced with traffic lights, while the roads will be widened to accommodate more lanes.
Improvements will also be made to the B1285 junction next to the Dalton Park shopping centre, with a completion date set for spring 2025.
