Breakfast habits and their impact on blood sugar levels has always been a hot topic among the health and diet-conscious. Some swear by starting their day with eggs alongside a couple of slices of freshly toasted bread, while others prefer their eggs plain, without any accompaniment. But, does adding bread to eggs affect blood sugar levels differently than eating eggs alone?
To investigate this, content creator Karan Sarin tried both variations. While eating eggs with slices of sourdough bread his blood sugar levels rose by 20 points, which was not concerning, eating only eggs resulted in no spike at all. “This is the reason why I love eggs because they don’t contain any carbs and are rich in protein and other nutrients,” he said in the reel.
We decided to find out more about this claim, and the combination of the two foods.
Sanchi Tiwari, nutritionist at Lord’s Mark Biotech confirms, “Adding bread to your egg for breakfast might give you a bit of a blood sugar spike compared to just having eggs alone. That’s because bread contains carbs that can raise your blood sugar levels faster than protein-rich eggs.”
So, if you’re watching your blood sugar levels, she says, you might want to keep an eye on how much bread you’re pairing with your eggs. However, everyone’s body reacts differently, so it’s always a good idea to listen to how your body responds and adjust accordingly.
Are there specific factors in bread that influence how eggs interact with blood sugar levels when consumed together?
“When it comes to your morning routine, the way you pair your eggs can make a real difference in how you feel throughout the day. Let’s talk about bread! Whether you’re a fan of whole grain goodness or can’t resist the allure of fluffy white slices, your choice matters when it comes to managing blood sugar levels alongside those eggs,” Tiwari says.
Whole grain bread, with its fiber-packed goodness, offers a slow and steady release of energy, helping to keep your blood sugar levels in check. It’s like giving your body a gentle wake-up call, setting the tone for a balanced day ahead.

On the flip side, she asserts, white bread might give you a quick burst of energy, but it can also lead to a rapid spike in blood sugar levels, leaving you feeling sluggish later on. It’s like a rollercoaster ride for your body – fun at first, but not so great in the long run.
“And let’s not forget portion size. A little goes a long way when it comes to bread. Opting for a moderate amount ensures you get that delicious flavour without sending your blood sugar levels on a wild ride,” she adds
So, next time you’re whipping up your favorite egg breakfast, think about the bread you’re pairing it with. Choose wisely, and your body will thank you with sustained energy and vitality all day long!
What alternative options could be considered to pair with eggs that might have a more favourable impact on glycemic response?
If you’re keeping a close eye on blood sugar levels, Tiwari recommends swapping traditional bread for alternatives that offer a gentler impact on glycemic response when pairing with eggs. “Options like whole grain or seed-based crackers, low-carb tortillas, or even sliced vegetables like bell peppers or cucumber can provide satisfying crunch and flavor without causing sharp spikes in blood sugar,” she suggests. Experimenting with these alternatives can help you find a delicious pairing that supports your health goals while still enjoying your morning eggs.
