Will do what party will decide, says Rahul Gandhi on contesting from Amethi
NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday slammed the BJP government over electoral bonds alleging that the saffron party has become a ‘warehouse of the corrupts.’
“If you wanted to bring transparency then why did you hide the names of those who gave money to BJP. And why did you hide the dates on which they gave you the money?… This is the biggest extortion scheme in the world,” Rahul said at a joint press meet in Ghaziabad.
When asked about the party’s performance in the upcoming elections Rahul said that he doesn’t make ‘poll predictions’ but claimed that the BJP will not win more than 150 seats.
“I do not do prediction of seats. 15-20 days ago I was thinking BJP would win around 180 seats but now I think they will be limited to 150 seats. We are getting reports from every state that we are improving.” he said.
Rahul while addressing a question about contesting from Amethi in the polls clarified, that he will abide by the ‘party’s decision’ on contesting the polls. Amethi used be a congress stronghold till 2019, when Smriti Irani defeated Rahull Gandhi by 55120 votes.
Rahul also alleged that the “BJP wants to destroy the constitution”, saying that the upcoming election is an ‘election of ideology.’
“First of all, I would like to wish everyone on the occasion of Ram Navami. The upcoming election is an election of ideology. On one side is RSS and BJP who are trying to do away with the Constitution. While on the other hand, the Congress party is trying to defend the Constitution,” the former Congress president said.
Rahul’s comments comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he was indebted to “Ambedkar’s samvidhan” for preserving the country’s diversity, facilitating equitable economic growth and enabling someone like him to “rise from humble origins to become PM”.
“The Constitution has served its purpose, keeping the country one and united. For us, it is sacred, and a repository of our aastha (faith),” PM Modi had said.
The SP and Congress have joined forces for the Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh. While the Congress is vying for 17 seats, SP and several other allies are competing for the remaining 63 seats in UP, which sends 80 members to the Lok Sabha.
