Recent attacks on Chinese nationals in Pakistan have stored diplomatic instability between the countries. These incidents include a suicide bombing on a convoy in Kohistan district, resulting in the death of five Chinese workers and their local driver. This marks the third attack within a month. China is building mega infrastructure projects around the globe to have a strong grasp on World Trade. Under a global initiative called Bri or Belt Rd. initiative, China has invested heavily in Pakistan through the China Pakistan Economic Corridor since 2021. That’s why a large number of Chinese workers are living in Pakistan and this is the reason for the conflict. We’ll come to the conflict part, but first let’s understand the significance of this entire project. Bri is a trillion dollar project and the dream vision of President Xi Jinping to make China the top leader of the world. China launched the Belt and Rd. initiative in 2013 with the aim of bolstering international connectivity through infrastructure, trade and Economic Cooperation across the globe. The China Pakistan Economic Corridor or the CPEC is a crucial component of the Bri. It is aimed at enhancing connectivity in Pakistan through highways, railways and pipelines facilitating trade and industrial development. CPEC spans 3000 kilometers connecting China Xinjiang Autonomous Region to Wadar Port in Balochistan, Pakistan. It provides China with access to the Middle East and Africa via the Indian Ocean while supporting Pakistans energy, infrastructure and economy. While Chinese investments were $65 billion have significantly benefited Pakistans economy, Recent attacks on Chinese workers raise concerns separatist and extremist groups such as the Baloch Liberation Army and Tehreek Taliban Pakistan accused China of exploiting local resources and neglecting the well-being of residents. They perceive the Pakistani government as complicit in these activities, leading to dissent and targeted attacks on Chinese projects. On March 26th, 5 Chinese workers and their Pakistani driver died when a suicide bomber rammed an explosive laden car into their bus. Other Chinese working on CPEC related projects have faced similar attacks in recent years. In July 2021, at least 13 people, including nine Chinese nationals, were killed when a suicide bomber detonated explosive in his vehicle near a bus carrying Chinese and Pakistani engineers and labourers, prompting Chinese companies to suspend work. In response, China has urged Pakistan to conduct thorough investigations into these attacks and provide adequate security for Chinese personnel. However, Pakistan has resisted delegating security responsibilities to China, citing concerns about sovereignty. Prime Minister Shehba Sharif has assured Chinese engineers of enhanced security to bolster Pakistan China friendship. India opposes the Bri and CPEC due to sovereignty and transparency concerns, particularly targeting the CPEC route through Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. A territory claimed by II has boycotted BRR summits and abstained from endorsing joint statements issued by the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
