Hours after the central government decided to hike the sugarcane support price, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that his government is committed to fulfilling every resolution related to the welfare of farmers across the country. The Prime Minister further said that the Centre’s step will benefit crores of sugarcane-producing farmers.

Taking to X, PM Modi said, “Our government is committed to fulfill every resolution related to the welfare of our farmer brothers and sisters across the country. In this context, a historic increase in the price of sugarcane purchase has been approved. This step will benefit crores of our sugarcane producing farmers.”

PM Modi’s comments came after the central government on Wednesday decided to hike the minimum price that mills have to pay to sugarcane growers by Rs 25 per quintal. The Caninet’s decision was announced for the 2024-25 season starting October this year.

Notably, this is the highest Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane announced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government since coming to power in 2014.

Cabinet Approves 8% Hike in Sugarcane FRP

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved an 8 percent hike in Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane from Rs 315 per quintal to Rs 340 per quintal. Union Minister Anurag Thakur said the price hike would ensure the fair and reasonable price of sugarcane to the farmers by the sugar mills.

“For 2024-25, sugarcane FRP will be Rs 340 per quintal… Before 2014, farmers had to come out on the streets for fertilizers. They were not getting their dues… The Modi government is committed to double farmers’ income,” Thakur said during a Cabinet briefing.

The government said the premium of Rs 3.32 per quintal will be provided for every 0.1 percentage point increase above 10.25% in the recovery. It will benefit more than 5 crore sugarcane farmers and their families.
