We currently do not have a commitment to program Kalki 2898 AD: Preetham Daniel – Exclusive
In the world of cinema, IMAX has been one of the biggest innovations of the past few decades, with every passing day, more and more screens are added into the format. If one looks at it, during the release of Tiger 3 in November, there were about 23 screens in India and by February, the number jumped to 28 – the latest one being Eros Cinema being converted to IMAX by PVR. Talking about it, Preetham Daniel, Vice-President APAC, Theatre Development, IMAX Corporation, shares that the network in India has grown 9 folds with just 3 screens in 2012 to 28 now. He also added that India also presents an opportunity to grow that number aggressively over the next several years. At last count, there are about 1700 odd IMAX screens in the world.
The year 2023 has been a great one for the format, not only across the globe but also in India, with films like Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan and Jawan, also Prabhas’ Salaar have contributed greatly, and it’s growth has also registered the fact that today people are more than willing to pay for the experience. Talking about it, Preetham says , “IMAX’s momentum in India has been driven in large parts by its local film strategy – Indian content continues to perform extremely well, where the box office share was at INR 45 crore (INR 450 million rupees) for 2023, beating the previous record set in 2022.” Not ony this, IMAX contributed US $ 1 billion to world box office in 2023.
“We released a record number of 8 Indian films in 2023, and we’re working to keep growing. In 2024, there’s sure to be an amazing slate of titles in the works originating from all regions of India, and it’s clear that there is a strong enough demand in India and around the world for Indian filmmaking of all types to continue the current growth trajectory,” he added.
Also, there has been a strong buzz going around regarding Prabhas- Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan’s latest film Kalki 2898 AD when it comes to IMAX format. It was reported a few weeks ago that Hollywood film Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which is all set to release on 10th May 2024, will be locking horns with Kalki 2898 AD which is releasing on 9th May. It was suggested that the Hollywood giant has signed a two week contract with IMAX for most of its screens across the globe, thus leaving screens for hardly any other film. Talking about it, Preetham says, “When we have a conflict in release dates, we work with the studio to find a solution that is mutually beneficial. We currently do not currently have a commitment to program Kalki 2898 AD”.
