fir registered against bjp leaders in wb over controversial ‘khalistani’ remark
An FIR was lodged at the Bhawanipur Police Station against leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in connection with the alleged ‘Khalistani’ remark directed towards an IPS officer.
IPS officer Jaspreet Singh was subjected to the derogatory term during a confrontation with state BJP leaders led by Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari as they were on their way to visit violence-hit Sandeshkhali.
Singh serves as the special superintendent in the intelligence branch. The incident occurred while Singh was addressing a group of protesting BJP leaders on Tuesday. The 2016-batch IPS officer faced the derogatory term during a legal discussion on Section 144 orders.
Singh, the only Sikh officer present, considered the comment inappropriate and illegal under IPC, prompting him to warn of potential actions. The Bengal police, in a statement, attributed the use of the term to Suvendu Adhikari, which he denied. Adhikari claimed that no one from the BJP had used the term and asserted respect for the Sikh community.
In response to the incident, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann deemed it “extremely unfortunate” in a social media post and urged the BJP to apologise to the Punjabi community. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the incident, and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed support for Jaspreet Singh.
