us air force’s ‘secret’ microwave missiles can destry iran’s nuclear facilities: report

The US Air Force has reportedly developed missiles that will be able to destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities by zapping their electronics, without harming any civilians. According to a report by investigative reporter Ronald Kessler for the Daily Mail, the US Air Force ‘secret’ missiles use high-powered microwaves which can render nuclear facilities dysfunctional without physically attacking them.

According to the report, these missiles are called ‘Counter-Electronics High Power Microwave Advanced Missile Project (CHAMP)’ and they have been developed by the Boeing’s Phantom Works for the US Air Force Research Laboratory. They were first tested successful in 2012 and installed in various locations around the world by 2019.

Ronald Kessler is a former investigative reported for the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. He has written three books: ‘The Secrets of the FBI,’ ‘The First Family Detail,’ and the ‘CIA at War.’

According to the report, the microwave weapons are installed in air-launched cruise missiles and dispatched from B-52 bombers. Capable of covering a distance of 700 miles, these missiles can penetrate enemy airspace at a low altitude and release intense bursts of high-power microwave (HPM) energy. This energy can destroy computer chips, rendering any electronic devices targeted by the missiles inoperative, all while avoiding any collateral damage.

The Daily Mail said that Mary Lou Robinson, then chief of the High Power Microwave Division of the Air Force Research Lab at Kirtland Air Force Base, had confirmed to the outlet for a previous report that 20 CHAMP missiles are operational and could be deployed on enemy targets, including nuclear reactors.

When the outlet reached out for comments on whether the CHAMP missiles will be deployed on Iranian nuclear facilities, officials said that such details are confidential and cannot be discussed.

“Operational security precludes us from discussing specific operational applications for our technologies,” Othana Zuch, an Air Force Research Laboratory public affairs officer, told the outlet.
