Budget 2024 wishlist: What citizens want on February 1

The Jan Bhagidari initiative on the MyGov portal saw citizens putting forth their expectations with over 1200 suggestions for the Interim Budget, which is only a week away.

As the anticipation builds for the Interim Budget 2024-25, the common man’s wishlist is clear, ranging from lower taxes and more rebates for senior citizens to a cap on real estate prices, Business Today reported.

With the Interim Budget aligning with the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections, focus is on proposals to provide relief to the middle class.

Suggestions include a reevaluation of income tax slabs for salaried individuals, fiscal incentives for senior citizens, and measures to enhance healthcare and infrastructure.

One prominent proposal is the call for a cap on real estate prices, aiming to make homes more affordable for the middle class.

Additionally, citizens advocate for a review of the income tax slabs, proposing fiscal incentives for senior citizens, such as loans for home renovation and painting, increased health insurance schemes, and discounts on train tickets.

Reverting to the Old Pension Scheme for government employees and a review of the ration card system to eliminate distinctions and provide free food grains for senior citizens over 65 are also suggested measures.

Moreover, citizens are advocating for higher taxes on pan masala, gutkha, alcohol, and cigarettes to reduce cancer risks and align with the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan for cleaner surroundings.

In the education sector, calls for government intervention to lower school fees and greater allocations for health and education to enhance service quality have been voiced.

Furthermore, there are appeals for measures supporting sustainable development, innovation, technology, and a focus on skill development, digital literacy, and investments in renewable energy.

Some unconventional proposals include doing away with all direct taxes in favor of a single goods and services tax rate. Additionally, there’s a call for tax incentives to companies promoting work from home, aligning with the evolving work landscape.

As Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman prepares to present the Interim Budget on February 1, the hopes and aspirations of the common people are resonating with a desire for a more inclusive and participative budget-making process.
