The Chinese embassy in India issued a statement over a media channel’s interview of Taiwan foreign minister JaushiehâJoseph Wu, alleging that this “provided platform for him to advocate ‘Taiwan independence'”. In response, Taipei said that India and Taiwan are democracies with free and vibrant presses.
It is of note that India follows the ‘One China policy’ vis-a-vis Taiwan and does not have formal diplomatic ties with Taipei.
The statement from the Chinese embassy read: “On 29th February 2024, certain Indian TV broadcasted an interview with the head of Taiwan’s foreign affairs office Joseph Wu, which provided platform for him to advocate ‘Taiwan independence’ and disseminate false information. It seriously violated the one-China principle, and is totally unacceptable.”
It defined the “One-China principle” as “There is only one China in the world, Taiwan is part of China, and the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China.”
In response, Taiwan’s foreign ministry said that India and Taiwan are both democracies with free and vibrant presses.Â
Taiwan asked Beijing to worry about its “economic slump, not bully its neighbours”.
