Manipur unrest: Eastern Command Chief visits strife-torn Pukhao village, Sugnu tense

Lt General Ram Chander Tiwari, Chief of the Eastern Command of the Army, visited strife-torn Pukhao village in Manipur, on Saturday.

In the latest fighting on February 13, a village volunteer from Pukhao Sontipur was killed.

Tiwari who landed at Laipham Grounds of Pukhao in Imphal East district around 10.15 am was accompanied by Rav Roop Singh, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South), and top Army officers.

He met the officers and other security personnel of Assam Rifles deployed in and around Pukhao village and took stock of the situation.

Pukhao village, bordering Kangpokopi district, is one of the worst-hit areas since violence erupted in Manipur on May 3 last year.

The Commandant of 18 AR briefed the actual ground report to the visiting General.

Later, the Eastern Command Chief went back to IGAR South where he held a meeting with top-ranking Army officials.

Fighting between armed miscreants belonging to Meiti and Kuki sects is rampant in Pukhao village.

Meanwhile, the situation remained tense in Sugnu, bordering Kakching and Churachandpur districts as intermittent firing along with shelling of bombs was reported on Saturday. Fresh fighting erupted in Sugnu on February 13.

On Friday, a head constable of Border Security Force sustained bullet injuries as armed miscreants from hills attacked several areas of Sugnu using automatic rifles along with heavy shelling.

The jawan has been identified as Som Dutt of Himachal Pradesh of the 136 BSF Delta company.

After having provided first aid at Sugnu community health centre he was evacuated to Imphal for further treatment. Police said the incident occurred around 7.45 am.

There were also reports of a bomb explosion inside a residence in Sugnu late last night around 11 pm. However, there was no report of any casualtiy.

A police team led by Kakching district SP investigated the area.
