This Maruti SUV alone has more sales than that of Renault, Nissan, Citroen combined in FY24

The country’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki India, strengthened its sport utility vehicle (SUV) portfolio in FY24 with the addition of two models — Fronx and Jimny. It already had the popular Brezza and the Grand Vitara. While the Fronx has done wonders for the company if we talk in volume terms, the Jimny has had an underwhelming performance to say the least.

Maruti launched the Fronx in April. During the period from April to February, the carmaker has sold 122,204 units of the Fronx. The Jimny entered the market in June, garnering a meagre volume of 16,691 units till February.

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx’s growing popularity can be measured from the fact that it alone has higher sales than the combined volume of three original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) — Renault, Nissan and Citroen.

In the April-February period, Renault has sold 41,214 units, while Nissan has registered sales of 27,445 units, according to data from the industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). Citroen’s volume stands at 7,361 units. The three OEMs have a cumulative volume of 76,020 units in the domestic market.

The Fronx is priced between Rs 7.51 lakh and Rs 13.03 lakh (ex-showroom). While Renault offers three models, Kwid, Triber and Kiger, none of them are priced higher than the Fronx. Same goes for the sole model, Magnite, sold in India by Nissan. The prices of Citroen’s three cars, C3, E-C3 and C3 Aircross, overlap with that of the Fronx, but the C5 Aircross is way more premium.

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx gets a couple of engine options — 1.2-litre Dual-Jet Dual-VVT petrol (90PS/113Nm) and 1.0-litre Turbo Boosterjet petrol (100PS/148Nm). While the 1.2-litre unit can be paired either with a 5-speed MT or a 5-speed AMT, the 1.0-litre unit gets 5-speed MT and 6-speed AT choices. There is a CNG option with the 1.2-litre units (77PS/98Nm) mated to a 5-speed MT.

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx mileage is claimed to be 21.79kmpl for the 1.2 MT, 22.89kmpl for the 1.2 AMT, 21.5kmpl for the 1.0 MT, 20.01kmpl for the 1.0 AT and 28.51kmpl for the 1.2 MT CNG.
