micahel vaughan reacts to hawk-eye founder’s ‘uneducated’ remark about drs: ‘show us how your operation works’
Michael Vaughan had expressed that there needs to be more transparency and clarity over DRS calls for viewers to know that integrity is “intact” behind the scenes when decisions are made. The furore over DRS broke out when Joe Root was at the receiving end of a close call in his second innings of the fourth Test between India and England in Ranchi.
The on-field call was not out with a possibility of the ball pitching outside the leg stump line. India took the review and sent it to the third umpire. The ball-tracking technology showed that the centre of the ball was marginally inside the line. The Impact and Wickets also favoured the bowling side, and with three reds, the decision had to be overturned to out.
While it is not clear as to why there is dissatisfaction from the England fans over the decision, Vaughan voiced that there needs to be a camera and microphone in the room where the operators of the DRS work.

Commentary Is Uneducated., And It Is Unfortunate From Michael Vaughan: Hawk-Eye Founder Paul Hawkins
Vaughan wrote in his column on The Telegraph, “So here is a simple solution to help improve transparency and accountability: stick a camera and microphone in the truck so as that a decision is being made, we all know exactly what is going on, and how much humans are involved. You could argue that those running the technology in the truck are as important as the two standing umpires.”
The founder of hawk-eye technology, Paul Hawkins was not impressed with Vaughan’s take on DRS and called it “uneducated”. Hawkins told on The Analytics Podcast, “The commentary, I think, is a little bit uneducated. It is unfortunate from Vaughan, because, obviously fantastic player, really enjoyed watching him play, and a great commentator, very entertaining. But I think it’s a responsibility to the game, in terms of journalism.”

In reply, Vaughan wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “It’s very simple. Show all decisions being made from the trucks then please for full transparency. Show the fans at home exactly how your operation works. That’s all I have asked for. Look forward to seeing it in full flow for the next Test in India.”
