NEW DELHI: In a significant development amidst the Wrestling Federation of India’s (WFI) suspension, the federation’s suspended president, Sanjay Singh, has extended invitations to Olympic medalist Bajrang Punia, World Championship medalist Vinesh Phogat, and retired wrestler Sakshi Malik to participate in national trials scheduled for March.
The trials will determine the composition of teams for upcoming Asian competitions, including the Paris 2024 Games Qualifiers in Kyrgyzstan.
Sanjay Singh, who remains at the helm despite the suspension, announced the trials to be held on March 10-11 at the K.D. Jadhav Wrestling Indoor Stadium, IGI Sports Complex, New Delhi.
The trials are crucial for selecting teams for the Senior Asian Wrestling Championship in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) from April 11 to April 16, as well as the Asian Olympic Games Qualifier Tournament at the same location from April 19 to April 21.
“I would like to inform all affiliated units of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) that the selection trials to select the teams for participation in the following events are being conducted on 10th and 11th March 2024 at K.D. Jadhav Wrestling Indoor Stadium, IGI Sports Complex, New Delhi,” said Sanjay Singh in a statement.
The invitation extends to star wrestlers Bajrang (65kg freestyle), Vinesh (55kg), and Sakshi (62kg), the latter having declared her retirement from the sport on the same day Sanjay Singh was elected president.
“All state units are requested to intimate the wrestlers as per the list attached to participate in the said trials,” added the statement.
This development follows the recent lifting of the suspension on the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) by United World Wrestling (UWW), facilitating the resumption of wrestling activities in the country. The national federation had been suspended following allegations of sexual harassment against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, prompting the sports ministry to intervene and oversee operations through an ad hoc council.
Amidst these tumultuous circumstances, the national trials hold paramount importance, particularly for wrestlers aiming to secure berths for prestigious international competitions and the Paris 2024 Olympics qualifiers.
Antim Panghal, India’s sole qualifier for the Paris Olympics thus far, is set to appear for trials in the 54kg category, underlining the significance of the event for India’s wrestling fraternity.
