BJP demands ‘One Nation One Election’ panel to hold Lok Sabha, assembly elections together
A delegation of BJP leaders, including party president J P Nadda and Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav, on Tuesday told the One Nation One Election committee chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind that elections to the Lok Sabha and the state assemblies should be held together to start with and the local body elections should be synchronised in time as well.
After meeting the committee, Nadda told reporters that the Representation of the People Act should be amended after building a consensus to enable simultaneous elections. He added that the party supports the idea of a common electoral roll and Voter ID for all elections. He said the Model Code of Conduct is always in force in some part of the country or the other, affecting administration and “good governance”.

He said frequent elections lead to a financial burden on parties and the government and becomes a cause of corruption.
As a part of its consultations, the committee had in October written to national and state parties seeking their views on simultaneous elections. Since then, it has been meeting political parties to discuss their views. The committee had been set up by the Union Law Ministry on September 2 to suggest ways to hold Lok Sabha, state assembly, municipalities and panchayat elections simultaneously.
