City witnesses a rousing play on fascism and art

The third day of the Literary Meet concluded with a show of Suman Mukhopadhyay’s Mephisto. The play featuring Anirban Bhattacharya, Anirban Chakrabarti, Riddhi Sen, Debleena Dutt and Sujan Mukherjee among others, highlights the conflict between fascism and freedom of expression through art. The performances put up by the ensemble cast, left the audience in awe.

107188743Based on Klaus Mann’s 1936 novel of the same name and inspired by its 1980 adaptation by Ariane Mnouchkine, the play unfolds through a series of events in early 20th century Germany and traces Adolf Hitler’s rise to power. It explores the plight of provincial theatre groups in Hamburg under the Third Reich. The protagonist, Hendrik Höfgen, efficiently essayed by Anirban, traces how an actor with Communist inclinations gave in to his greed of becoming famous by moving to Berlin, to eventually become a puppet artiste for the State, leading to his downfall.

107188754“We first staged this production in 2002. Over the past two decades we’ve staged the play multiple times, but the last three performances were done with a new cast, starting right before the 2022 state elections. Mephisto is a reflection of contemporary times through the mirror of history,” Suman expressed before opening the play to a packed auditorium.

The show ended with the background screen lighting up with snippets of wars and massacres from all across the globe, reminding everyone why such a narrative is relevant to not just our country, but the world.
