Sikkim’s Sanglaphu Lake opened to the public for the first time in history!

Sanglaphu Cho, also known as the “Great Lake,” is a revered lake and its water has immense religious significance. Locals often visit to seek blessings and offer prayers. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks and pristine wilderness, the lake exudes a sense of serenity and tranquility.

The opening ceremony of the lake was equally awesome! To commemorate the lake’s inaugural opening, a ceremonial prayer was conducted by monks from the Samten Choling Monastery in Lachung.

The event was attended by esteemed members of the Lachung dzomsa alongside representatives from the hotel association and cab drivers.

But before you plan your visit, you need to follow a few things crucial to protect the lake’s sanctity and environmental preservation. Visitors are urged to refrain from bringing any single-use plastic items, including tetra packs.

As of now, only vehicles equipped with four-wheel drives are recommended for accessing the lake, with plans for broader accessibility as snow gradually recedes. Spitting around the lake and within the region is strictly prohibited.

Sanglaphu, nestled in the northeast of Sikkim, is a heritage site in Sikkim. It’s not only a natural wonder, but also is of huge religious significance. Gurudongmar Lake, set at a staggering altitude of 5425 m (17,800ft), serves as a vital source of the Lachen stream, which feeds into the Teesta River.
