New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday gave Maharashtra Speaker Rahul Narwekar time till January 10 to decide on disqualification petitions against MLAs, including Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The Speaker has sought extension of time to decide disqualification pleas against rebel MLAs of Shiv Sena and NCP. Earlier, the Supreme Court asked the Maharashtra Speaker to decide by December 31 on the disqualification petitions pending before him.
A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra were hearing the appeal for deadline extension filed by the Maharashtra Speaker. The Maharashtra Speaker, represented by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, argued in court that there were 2,70,000 documents that had to be examined which would take additional time. In the submission before the SC, the Speaker has said he will not seek more time.
