Shekhar Suman on working in ‘Heeramandi’: ‘It is never a comeback’

Actor Shekhar Suman, who is currently the talk of the town for his role in the Netflix series ‘Heeramandi’, recently spoke about his experience of working in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali-directorial. In an interview, Suman compared himself to Dilip Kumar and Aamir Khan and additionally stated that he doesn’t call ‘Heeramandi’ his comeback.Â

While speaking to Indian Express, Shekhar Suman, who plays Nawab Zulfikar Ahmed in ‘Heeramandi’, said that he has taken a leaf from Dilip Kumar. He said, “He used to probably do one film in two-three years. Aamir Khan… they all sort of preserve themselves in a manner that people have this thirst to watch them. There is no point getting steeped into mediocrity, that is very painful for an actor. In the midst of a show or a movie you realise that you’ve made a mistake. That’s the worst feeling.”Â

When asked if ‘Heeramandi’ can be called his comeback, the actor said, “I am quintessentially a theatre actor. It is never a comeback. You are just waiting for the right role to happen. There might be a hiatus, you give it a gap, because the role has to excite me. I don’t work just for the sake of being seen that I am a part of 10 OTT series, five films.”Â

Shekhar Suman was last seen in Sanjay Dutt’s 2017 film ‘Bhoomi’.Â

‘Heeramandi’, which started streaming on Netflix on May 1, has received a mixed response from the audience. While some have praised it for being a visual extravaganza, some have criticised it for being factually incorrect.

The story of ‘Heeramandi’ revolves around the courtesans of Lahore and their lives in the red-light district of Heeramandi. Besides Hydari, it also stars Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Richa Chadha, Shekhar Suman, and others.
