Doctor Who viewers all say the same thing about 'tense, emotionally devastating' episode

Doctor Who viewers have been left raving about the current episode of the long running BBC sci-fi drama which saw The Doctor (played by Ncuti Gatwa) spend most of the epsiode standing on a landmine. Entitled Boom the episode was written by Steven Moffat who was previously a showrunner on the programme.

He left the show in 2017 and the last episode he worked on until now was that year's festive special. Fans were delighted to have him back and enthralled by his first episode in seven years and they took to X, formerly known as Twitter to share their thoughts.

@Mortyjr5 enthused: "WOW WOW WOW No spoilers but the latest #DoctorWho episode "BOOM" was incredible What a return to form! interesting premise, great performances with humour mixed in the right amount Absolutely outstanding@TheDrWhoPod @DanGriffin21 @SJPWORDS."

@cavedawes agreed writing "#DoctorWho #Boom Wow! So this is one of those episodes you'll be unpacking and talking about for years. @SWmoff has ramped up the debates in the whole arena embracing AI, algorithms and coded common sense dictated here by an automated ambulance!"

@SillyTilly9 gushed: "Just finished #DoctorWho Boom. God Moffat is good. How basically the majority of the episode takes place around the same small bit of location and it still has you gripped throughout. Just great writing and a great cast. Best showcase of how good Ncuti and Millie are together yet."

@chorlton655 commented: "I've finished watching #boom #DoctorWho and it's phenomenal. It's one of the best episodes for years and a huge improvement on the previous two. This is why I keep watching."

@Matt_Aspden had a similar sentiment writing: "#DoctorWho just watched episode 3. God I've missed Moffat's writing. I enjoyed the first 2 eps, but this one proves we can get serious and do it well. I have a lot more confidence about the dynamic of The Doctor and Ruby now, it was crucial we saw this side to their relationship."

However @PierreJouet wasn't a fan opining: "A rehash of Moffatt's favourite tropes that felt like nothing new. #DoctorWho #Boom."

The proiase comes after the first couple of episodes were branded "woke and unwatchable" by fans. The tense episode saw the Doctor an Ruby arrive on a planet called Kastarion 3 where he accidentally stood on a landmine, meaning he was unable to move for almost the full episode.

In a surprise twist it also introduced Andor actress Varada Sethu to the show far earlier than was expected.

In April it was confirmed that she would join the cast for the next season in 2025 and play a companion alongside Ncuti and Millie. However she appeared in the latest episode as a character called Mundy Flynn with her name leading the Doctor to quip she should marry Ruby and ben Mundy Sunday.

Speaking on spin off show Doctor Who: Unleashed, she revealed that she had no idea she would later be cast as a full-time companion while filming this episode.

I was just in it for the ride, I had a great time for those three weeks. I was devastated to be leaving because I had so much fun but I didn't know anything about it. That call came much later, months and months later."

It is unknown if her companion role will see her playing the same character or if showrunners have another surprise up their sleeve.

Doctor Who is on BBC One on Saturday nights and previous episodes are available on BBC iPlayer.
