- It's the end of an era for Nintendo online services on Wii U and 3DS, but fans can still enjoy Wii U Switch ports.
Despite Nintendo “permanently” shutting down its Wii U and 3DS servers, four players remain online on the Nintendo Network 40 days later. By collectively staying online on the Wii U and 3DS servers, the players have beaten a record famously set by Halo 2 fans over a decade ago.
The Nintendo Network server shutdown was made known to players last year. One of the games affected by this shutdown is Splatoon, a colorful third-person shooter which was originally launched in 2015 on the Wii U.

As reported on GamesRadar+, there are still players online despite Nintendo’s decision to permanently shut down Wii U and 3DS online servers. Four players have been able to stay online on either the Wii U or 3DS servers. According to GaffsNotLaffs, Lcd101 is still enjoying online functionality on Splatoon. Fishguy6564 is on Mario Kart 7. Another player, SlitherySheep, is on Super Mario Maker, and Omoroid is on Xenoblade Chronicles X. Previously, GaffsNotLaffs had tracked the number of players still online on Wii U and 3DS servers at 10 before that figure went down to the current four. This shutdown took effect in April of this year. Lcd101 plans on staying online in Splatoon. In a recent update, the player stated, "I am still online, but the lobby gives me the error code for maintenance, 106-0811. I intend to stay online in this state for as long as possible.” It is unclear how long he and the other three players will be able to stay online.
For fans of Nintendo’s online services on the Wii U and 3DS, this is the end of an era. However, they can still enjoy the online functionality of Wii U titles that were ported to the Nintendo Switch.
