The BCCI along with national selectors have mandated players, who are not part of the India squad for the England series, to play for their respective state teams in the upcoming round of Ranji Trophy matches commencing February 16. The decision was taken after several players, including Ishan Kishan, skipped the Ranji Trophy matches to get themselves prepared for the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Ishan Kishan pulled out of the South Africa tour citing mental health issues and skipped the T20I series vs Afghanistan. He was also not selected for the Test series vs England. India coach Rahul Dravid said that Ishan Kishan will have to play some cricket before making a return to the India squad. The southpaw, who was expected to play for Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy, ignored his advice and instead went to Baroda to practice with the Pandya brothers.

Meanwhile, the BCCI’s mandate is not just applicable to Ishan Kishan but players such as Krunal Pandya and Deepak Chahar, who are not in India’s scheme of things for Test cricket, and even Shreyas, who was dropped from the final three Tests vs England, will have to follow the mandate and join their respective state teams for the Ranji matches.

The BCCI said that the players cannot just prioritize IPL or International cricket. “Players cannot simply prioritize international cricket or the IPL. They must make themselves available for domestic cricket and honour their commitments to their respective state teams,” a BCCI source said as quoted by CricBuzz

Players such as Hardik Pandya, who is yet to get clearance from the NCA and Virat Kohli, who is out due to personal reasons, won’t be affected by the mandate.
