New Delhi: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha was produced before Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court on Friday after she was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the alleged Delhi liquor policy case. The court has reserved its order for later in the day regarding CBI’s plea seeking five-day custody of the arrested BRS leader.
K Kavitha, who is the daughter of former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 15 after a search was conducted at her residence in Hyderabad.
K Kavitha Arrested By CBI: Top Developments
1. The CBI arrested K Kavitha on Thursday after grilling her in Tihar jail, where she is lodged after her arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
2. The CBI moved an application seeking five days of custody of K Kavitha. While seeking custody, the CBI claimed that a liquor businessman met Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and sought assistance for starting a business in the national capital. “We have sufficient material, Whatsapp chats and statements of the associated accused,” the CBI said.
3. A Delhi Court on Friday reserved its order regarding CBI’s request seeking five-day custody of K Kavitha. Special Judge Kaveri Baweja reserved the order after hearing arguments by the CBI and the counsel that appeared for Kavitha.
4. The CBI told the court that K Kavitha was not cooperating in the investigation and was reserved in her replies.
5. Opposing the CBI’s plea, Advocate Nitesh Rana, who appeared as a counsel for the accused, called her arrest illegal. He accused the probe agency of violating the BRS leader’s fundamental rights.
6. K Kavitha was taken under custody by CBI under sections of criminal conspiracy and falsification of accounts of the Indian Penal Code & certain sections of Prevention of Corruption Act.
7. Notably, Kavitha was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in a money laundering case linked to the alleged excise policy scam on March 15. The ED had arrested Kavitha from her Banjara Hills residence in Hyderabad.
8. She was the third high-profile politician to be arrested in the case after AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh. On March 21, Arvind Kejriwal was arrested in connection with the case.
9. Following her arrest, Kavitha was sent to the central agency’s custody till March 23. The Rouse Avenue Court on Tuesday extended her judicial custody until April 23.
10. Kavitha, an MLC and daughter of former Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao, has been accused of being a member of the “South Group”, which allegedly paid the ruling AAP in Delhi kickbacks of Rs 100 crore in return for a big share of liquor licences in the national capital.
