Prove you were a PLA soldier, China tells ‘spy’
BHOPAL: Chinese soldier, jailed spy, village shopkeeper in MP and a loving father… After being all this, Wang Qi aka Raj Bahadur faces an ‘identity crisis’ yet again, reported.
The Chinese embassy in India has asked Qi to furnish documents to prove he was a PLA soldier. Qi was caught by Indian Army for trespassing into Arunachal in 1963. He claims he was a PLA mechanical survey engineer and inadvertently crossed the border. Since the war was over, he was treated as a spy and not accorded POW status.
He spent eight years in jail and after being freed, took on the name Raj Bahadur and settled down in MP’s Balaghat. He married and had children. In 2017, Qi finally visited China & was given a grand welcome.
The embassy notice has, however, hit him like a bolt from the blue. His son told TOI: “My father wrote to the embassy for his pensions, but they asked him to prove that he was enlisted in the army.”
