Sandeshkhali unrest: Supreme Court stays Lok Sabha panel notice to Bengal Chief Secy, DGP on BJP MP complaint

The Supreme Court Monday stayed further proceedings on a breach of privilege notice issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat to West Bengal Chief Secretary, DGP and other officials over alleged misconduct against BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar.

On February 15, the Lok Sabha Privileges Committee issued summons to senior officials in the state on a complaint filed by Majumdar over alleged “misconduct, brutality and life-threatening injuries” to him during a protest. A day earlier, the Balurghat MP had sustained injuries when he fell on the bonnet of a van during a scuffle with the police at Taki in North 24 Parganas district. He trying to march towards Sandeshkhali where people have been protesting against a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader.

The Parliament committee had summoned Chief Secretary Bhagwati Prasad Gopalika, Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar, North 24 Parganas District Magistrate Sharad Kumar Dwivedi, Basirhat SP Hossain Mehdi Rehman, and Additional SP Partha Ghosh to appear before it on February 19.

Villagers in Sandeshkhali have pointed fingers at Sheikh Shahjahan, an influential TMC leader of the area, for alleged sexual atrocities on women and land grabbing.
