Pirated copies of 'Monkey Man' circulate on internet amid India release uncertainty

Since Dev Patel’s critically acclaimed film ‘Monkey Man’ has not been released in India yet, cinephiles in the country have found its pirated version on the internet. This happened after ‘Monkey Man’ was made available on ‘Video on Demand’ (VOD) platforms in the US on the occasion of Patel’s birthday on April 23.

The film’s official X account announced on Tuesday, “Watch #MonkeyManMovie at home now and prepare yourself for a ‘hard-hitting, bone-breaking, badass’ movie (Multiplex Show) from Producer Jordan Peele and Director Dev Patel.”

Many Indians have downloaded and watched ‘Monkey Man’, which draws heavily from Indian mythology. An X user wrote, “Dude does everyone have the monkey man link but me.” Another person added, “#MonkeyMan torrent is going to break records in India. Yes? No? (sic)” “I haven’t watched the film Monkey Man, but the pace of torrent sharing is tremendous (sic),” added another.

Some also reacted after watching the film. A post on X read, “Hats off to Dev Patel, who did not compromise his film. This revenge action thriller can clearly avoid the obvious political symbolism, but it didn’t (sic).” One of the X users added, “This is exactly what I need from an action movie (sic).” A post on X also read, “MONKEY MAN only got better the longer it went. Once that second half kicked in, it was over. Ruled exponentially.”

‘Monkey Man’ was initially scheduled to release in India on April 5, along with its global release. However, the film didn’t get the go-ahead from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Still, there is no clarity about the film’s theatrical release in the country.

The film is a revenge drama revolving around the life of a young man who struggles to make ends meet in an underground fight club, where he wears a gorilla mask and endures brutal beatings from renowned fighters night after night, for cash.

‘Monkey Man’ also features Sobhita Dhulipala, Makarand Deshpande, Sikander Kher, and others. The film is produced by Jordan Peele, who came on board well after production.
