Bharat Bandh on 16th Feb: Latest update and travel guidelines to follow
107713311On February 16, India braces for a nationwide protest as workers and farmers have announced a sectoral industrial strike and Grameen Bharat Bandh. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha, representing farmers in a non-political capacity, has issued a call for unity among farmer organisations to participate in the day-long protest, slated to run from 6 AM to 4 PM.
If reports are to go by, the protest will feature extensive chakka jams, or roadblocks, on major thoroughfares across the country, with a particular focus on Punjab where most state and national highways are expected to be closed for four hours.
A joint statement signed by 34 public intellectuals and artists has voiced support for the strike, urging people from diverse backgrounds to stand in solidarity with the farmers and workers. The statement emphasises the importance of this “momentous action” and calls for widespread support.
Despite the disruption caused by the Bharat Bandh, emergency services such as ambulance operations, medical shops, and schools are expected to remain operational, ensuring minimal impact on essential services.

The strike and Bharat Bandh represent a unified effort by workers and farmers to highlight pressing issues and demand action from the government. With widespread support and participation, the protest aims to draw attention to the challenges faced by these marginalised groups and push for meaningful change.

Alternative routes: Due to heightened security measures at border checkpoints, significant traffic congestion is expected at locations such as Ghazipur, Gurugram, and Singhu borders. The Delhi Police has been diligently sharing daily updates regarding safe and faster routes on their social media platforms.
What to avoid: Keeping the current situation, it’s best to avoid making travel plans for the states of Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
Flexible schedule: If possible, adjust your travel schedule to avoid peak traffic hours. Consider starting your journey earlier or later to minimise the impact of congestion.
Public transportation: Consider utilising public transportation options such as metro services or buses, which may offer a more efficient and hassle-free commute during this time.
Emergency services: Despite the traffic congestion, emergency services such as ambulance operations will remain operational. Ensure that you have access to emergency contact numbers and medical assistance if needed.
