Life in IIT Bombay: ‘It’s not just about classes and learning from curriculum’
– Pranav Vivek Malpure
My journey towards engineering was fuelled by interests in robotics, aerospace and my love for science and mathematics. I was drawn to machines and mathematics more in Class 10, and considering the options one has after doing engineering, I embarked on a gradual preparation journey.
After cracking JEE Advanced in 2020, I got admission to BTech in Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay).
JEE preparation, coaching
I started preparing for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) from my Class 11. It was a two-year-long coaching programme. I was enrolled in a local coaching institute in my hometown – Mumbai.
I first appeared for JEE Main in January 2020 and then the Covid-delayed the second session held in September and qualified for JEE Advanced. For JEE preparation, I relied on self-study with significant support from the local coaching. The coaching I was enrolled in regularly used to provide us with assignments and homework, and had doubt-clearing sessions which significantly aided in my journey towards IIT Bombay.
I was enrolled in an integrated programme where the load of the school was not that high. I basically prepared for JEE Main and when the board exams neared, I shifted my focus to the board exams.
At the coaching institute, I immersed myself in the study material provided and actively sought clarification for any doubts I encountered. I also made it a point to participate in weekly practice tests to gauge my progress. I was motivated to join the IIT, so I never thought the process was tiring and exhausting.
Online batch, transition to new environment
Unfortunately, the classes in the initial three semesters after my admission were held online due to the restrictions imposed by Covid. I came to IIT Bombay for offline classes in 2022. Life in IIT Bombay is not just about offline classes and learning things from the curriculum. It is also about living with your peers and growing non-academically. It was a bit disappointing that my dream to be in an IIT was marred by lockdown and restrictions.
After coming to the institute in 2022, it took me quite some time to adjust to the surroundings and the hostel life. As my home was not too far and only a 30-minutes away, I used to go and visit my parents every weekend during my initial days.
Clubs, societies, community service
I was enrolled in an electronics and robotics club in IIT Bombay. I joined the club as I was always drawn to their numerous scopes and wide arena. In my first year, I also participated in boot camps held as part of the clubs.
I applied for the electronics and robotics community at the end of first year and was selected in my second year as a convenor.
My decision to join the club was by far the wisest decision. I got to know my seniors, built networks and I got to know about the field much better.
I am now part of the Humanoid Tech Team. It is an initiative aimed at transforming library operations through cutting-edge technology. Our project is by Makers Bhavan Foundation that seeks to address the common challenges faced in libraries, including disorganised book returns and misplaced books on shelves. I am co-leading the team.
When I look back to 2022, now I realise how I have grown as a person. I was shy and an introvert, and I was reluctant to initiate any conversation earlier. I am now a confident person who is not introverted and shy anymore. I am now more capable of handling things better.
‘Priotising things is the rule’, daily routine
There is no fixed formula for managing studies. Prioritising is the key. I have made it a rule to understand things taught in class and then use that knowledge. I give 50 per cent time of the day to academics and the remaining 50 per cent to hobbies. I play badminton in the evening. I have also a harmonium in my room. I play that during my leisure time.
I am in the last semester now. I am now exploring stuffs more. I have recently started swimming. IIT Bombay has a nice and beautiful campus. I nowadays also cycle during the evening. I am not much into hanging out with friends but yes, I go for movies with my friends and go cycling in the evening.
I have not thought about my future course. I might go for postgraduate studies. Both my parents are doctors, I might also consider robotics in healthcare.
