How much longer will of 5 members continue to override collective voice of 188 nations: India on UNSC reform

NEW DELHI: In a notable address at the Inter-Governmental Negotiations on Security Council Reform, India’s permanent representative at the UN, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive reform of the UN Security Council. She questioned the prevailing imbalance where the will of the five permanent members overrides the collective voice of 188 member states. Kamboj stressed the importance of “equity” in shaping global decision-making, urging a change in the perpetuation of power by the permanent members – China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US.

India highlighted the need to redress historical injustices, advocating for greater representation for regions like Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Kamboj underlined the transformative power of political will, citing India’s proactive inclusion of the African Union as a full member of the G20. She asserted that a bold vision for a more equitable and inclusive world must guide the reform process, calling for changes in both permanent and non-permanent categories.

The representative questioned whether the international community wishes to perpetuate existing inequities through a selective expansion or pursue comprehensive reform to address historical injustices. India, a key proponent of Security Council reform, reiterated its stance that an inclusive decision-making process and reform in working methods, including the question of the veto, are crucial to adapting to the current geopolitical context.
