‘notre dame moment’ in denmark as massive fire engulfs historic stock exchange in copenhagen | video
Copenhagen: A massive fire engulfed the old stock exchange of Denmark’s capital Copenhagen on Tuesday morning. The video of the incident also surfaced online.
In the video, an envelope of black smoke could be seen billowing out of the Bourse. The flames engulfed the entire structure. The spire of the building collapsed and crashed onto the street.
No casualties have been reported so far. The police asked people to avoid visiting the area. According to reports, there were people inside the building when the fire broke out. All people were evacuated safely, a police spokesperson told reporters.
The deputy prime minister of Denmark, Troels Lund Poulsen, termed the fire as ‘Notre Dame moment’ for the country, as reported by The Guardian.
Visuals of the incident:
Denmark’s minister of culture, Jakob Engel-Schmidt claimed that 400 years of cultural legacy has been damaged.
“How touching it is to see how the employees at Borsen, good people from the emergency services and passers-by work together to rescue art treasures and iconic images from the burning building,” he wrote in a post on X.
Emergency personnel are trying to control the blaze, reported CNN.
The old stock exchange was established in 1625. It is within a short stroll from Christiansborg Palace. The Bourse was commissioned by King Christian IV and was built between 1619 and 1640.
