New Zealand need 227 runs to win the second Test against South Africa as the Kiwis finished day 3 of the game in Seddon Park at 40 runs for the loss of a wicket in the second innings while chasing 267.

The hosts have a 1-0 lead in the two-match Test series and will look to complete a whitewash of the touring Proteas when they come out to bat on the penultimate day of the Test.

South Africa won the toss and opted to have a bat first as they were bundled out for 242 runs by the Kiwis as Will O’Rourke starred with a four-wicket haul. Ruan de Swardt was the only South African batter to go past the half-century mark with his 64 runs knock, while Shaun von Berg, David Bedingham and Raynard van Tonder chipped in with 38, 39 and 32 runs respectively.

South Africa hit back with the ball as Dane Piedt picked up a five-wicket haul as NZ folded for 211 runs with Kane Williamson top scoring with 43 runs, while Tom Latham added 40 runs.

SA went into their second innings with a slender lead and managed to add 235 runs to the advantage as Bedingham came up with a brilliant ton scoring 110, supported by Keegan Petersen’s 43-run contribution.

O’Rourke was once again the pick of the Kiwi bowlers with his five-wicket haul before the Kiwis came out to chase the target.

The hosts lost the wicket of opener Devon Conway before stumps on the third day as he fell to Piedt, who trapped the batter plumb in front of the wicket.
