The latest trailer for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has been unveiled, teasing the rise of a menacing new villain. Directed by Wes Ball, the film is set centuries after the events depicted in War for the Planet of the Apes, marking the culmination of Caesar’s (Andy Serkis) saga. Owen Teague assumes the protagonist role as Noa, a newcomer embarking on an epic journey alongside Mae (Freya Allan), a human counterpart. Together, they confront Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand), a malevolent and formidable ape ruler.
With the release of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes drawing near, the latest trailer from 20th Century Studios delves deeper into the film’s narrative, particularly focusing on the character of Proximus Caesar. The trailer suggests Proximus Caesar’s ambition to expand and solidify his authority, as he boldly declares, “Bend for your king!”
The new villain: Proximus Caesar
Following Caesar’s demise in War for the Planet of the Apes, his legacy lives on in the forthcoming sequel. The latest trailer of the film suggests that Proximus Caesar has twisted Caesar’s teachings to serve his personal ambitions. While no specifics are given, Proximus is depicted as power-hungry and merciless, employing a security force of shock-stick-wielding apes to enforce his rule and punish dissenters.
The trailer features Caesar’s symbol displayed behind Proximus as he addresses a crowd. This symbol, a circle with a four-pointed star, mirrors the window from which Caesar gazed in 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes. However, instead of symbolising freedom and peace for apes, this emblem now represents oppression and a totalitarian regime.

In the Planet of the Apes reboot trilogy, each installment has featured a distinct central antagonist, with each antagonist meeting their defeat within the confines of a single film.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is likely to follow this pattern, potentially setting the stage for a broader narrative to unfold across multiple sequels. While the true extent of Proximus Caesar’s menace remains to be seen, the film promises to inject fresh and intriguing elements into the franchise.
“Many years after the reign of Caesar, a young ape goes on a journey that will lead him to question everything he’s been taught about the past and make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike,” read the official synopsis of the film.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be available in theatres on May 10 this year.
