Aditya Dhar opens up about ‘Article 370’ and ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike’ being called ‘agenda-driven’ films: ‘Nothing can be above the audience’

Aditya Dhar is gearing up for his upcoming production venture ‘Article 370,’ starring his wife actress Yami Gautam and Priyamani in leading roles. In a recent interview, he addressed the criticism towards his 2019 film, ‘Uri: The Surgical Strike,’ starring Vicky Kaushal. He mentioned that ‘Article 370’ will be about women’s emancipation.

In an interview with Indian Express, Aditya shared that he never paid heed to people who called his film ‘an agenda-driven film filled with jingoism.’ He believes that the flak ‘Uri’ received did not affect the views of the real audience. While calling the audience intelligent, Aditya thanked them for understanding the difference between an agenda-driven film and a film made with great intent.

He appreciated the audiences saying, “They also understand the difference between a project and a film. I remember many people trashed Uri at that time, but the audience basically shut them up with the way it went on. The fact is that nothing can be above the audience.”

Aditya revealed that ‘Article 370’ is taken in chronological order and it shows exactly what happened there without jingoism. He also mentioned that no one will find it distasteful as it is a pure story of how people pulled off such a massive operation. ‘People who say we do not make big female-oriented films in India, have to go and watch it. This film proves what matters is a great story, not whether a male or female played the lead role,’ he added. He called it a film of women’s empowerment.

In the same interview, he opened up about many demotivating him, saying, ‘war films will not work in India’. ‘Border’ in 1997, ‘Lakshya’ and ‘LOC’ made no money, so a lot of people approached Ronnie Screwvala not to make this film, warning it would be a flop. But Aditya took that challenge and after the release of ‘Uri,’ there was a spate of war films, army films in India.
