A day after the CBI created a dedicated email-id for victims of violence and alleged sexual assault in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali, the agency reportedly received around 50 complaints, sources said Friday.

The sources added that the complaints will be first verified and only then the agency will take cognisance of the matter.

The CBI’s steps came after the Calcutta High Court gave a directive regarding complaints of crime against women and land grabbing in Sandeshkhali.

In pursuance of the order passed by the Division bench of Calcutta High Court on April 10, the CBI created a dedicated email ID “[email protected]” on which complaints of the persons of Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas, regarding crime against women and forcible grabbing of land could be lodged.

The District Magistrate, North 24 Parganas, was also requested to give adequate publicity of the said email ID in the locality and also issue a Public Notice in the vernacular dailies having wide circulation in the areas as per the Hon’ble High Court’s order.

Sandeshkhali violence prime accused Sheikh Shahjahan arrestedOn the night of February 28, the West Bengal Police apprehended Sheikh Shahjahan, a controversial figure within the Trinamool Congress, in connection with an assault on Enforcement Directorate officials the previous month.

Following allegations of land grabbing and sexual assault by villagers in Sandeshkhali, Shahjahan was remanded to 10 days of police custody by a court in North 24 Parganas district on February 29.

In response to his arrest, the Trinamool party took swift action, suspending Shahjahan from their ranks in North 24 Parganas for a period of six years.

The situation in Sandeshkhali had escalated in early February when villagers staged violent protests, demanding accountability from Shahjahan and other local Trinamool leaders.

While police had already arrested Trinamool leaders Shiboprasad Hazra and Uttam Sardar, who faced similar charges, Shahjahan had managed to evade authorities until his recent apprehension.
