Mast Mein Rehne Ka review: Jackie Shroff and Neena Gupta’s film is cliched yet heartfelt
Cast: Jackie Shroff, Neena Gupta, Rakhi Sawant, Abhishek Chouhan, Monika Panwar
Director: Vijay Maurya
Language: Hindi
They say Mumbai is city of dreams, but it’s also described as a city that never sleeps. It’s one of the most populated cities in India and we have seen endless faces occupying it through the medium of cinema. We now get two aging fictional characters Jackie Shroff and Neena Gupta in writer and director Vijay Maurya’s film Mast Mein Rehne Ka. The background music keeps harping on the title occasionally, suggesting how life is all about living to the fullest.
It’s a noble thought driven home endlessly over the course of Hindi cinema’s growth and progress. And given the chaos and claustrophobia this city accompanies, the title seems to be at odds with its sheer unpredictability. But it’s worth giving a shot, at least that’s what the eccentric and entertaining people in the film preach, with all gusto. And to see Rakhi Sawant in a film after ages is refreshing, and she does own the scenes she’s in.
There’s also something about the vintage career of Jackie Shroff and new found success of Neena Gupta, both brim with enthusiasm to take on roles that continue to challenge their craft. Shroff, for all his style and swagger in the 80s and 90s, has charmingly embraced his aging days and played appropriately written roles. Gupta does overcook her feisty avatar and it becomes a hindrance in the narrative after a point. Still, it’s heartening to see the two in the same frame.
The story doesn’t end with these two, there’s another track of Abhishek Chauhan, Monika Panwar, and the youth of the city seems as confused as the elders. The one thing Mast Mein Rehne Ka establishes is that problems and issues don’t discriminate or hold back, and one has to be prepared to face them. Vijay Maurya hasn’t crafted a novel film that stays with you for long, but certain moments do feel like a warm hug one needs after a restless and exhausting day, especially in a city that never sleeps.
