Marcus Stoinis wrote his name in the history books after Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) pulled off a huge upset in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) by breaching fortress Chepauk by defeating Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday (April 11).
LSG registered the biggest-run chase in IPL history in Chennai by chasing down 211 with three balls to spare. Stoinis played one of the greatest knocks in IPL history to single-handedly take the KL Rahul-led side over the line in a dramatic last-over finish.
By virtue of the result, LSG have upstaged CSK and climbed to fourth place in the table, having won five out of their eight games so far. The Luckow-based franchise has beaten the defending champions for the second time in four days and won the reverse fixture on Friday (April 19) in Lucknow too.
Stoinis played an unbeaten knock of 124 runs in 63 balls, which included 13 boundaries and six sixes, the highest individual score in the history of the IPL. The Australian all-rounder broke a 13-year-old IPL record held by Paul Valthathy, who had made a knock of 120 playing for Kings XI Punjab against Chennai Super Kings in the 2011 IPL in Mohali.

This was Stoinis’ first-ever century in the IPL, having made his debut in the league eight years ago in 2016 for Kings XI Punjab. The 34-year-old later played for the Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru before being one of LSG’s three pre-auction draft picks.
Talking about the 2024 IPL, this was CSK’s first defeat at home in the 2024 season.
