Manchester United will reportedly snub the chance to make Sofyan Amrabat’s loan from Fiorentina permanent next summer.

Amrabat emerged as one of Erik ten Hag’s top targets last summer after impressing for club and country, playing a key role in Morocco’s run to the 2022 World Cup semi-finals.

He eventually arrived at Old Trafford on deadline day, with United paying £8.5million to sign the defensive midfielder on loan, with the option to buy for £21.5m.

However, the 27-year-old has flattered to deceive so far this season, contributing to the Red Devils’ inconsistent form that has left them seventh in the Premier League and knocked out of Europe already.

There were reports in November that Ten Hag’s backroom staff had raised concerns about Amrabat’s abilities and it now appears that the manager is also unconvinced.

The Sun claim that United are unlikely to make his loan permanent, with Ten Hag’already planning’ for when the player departs at the end of the season.

It is said that while it is agreed that Amrabat is a good player, he is unlikely to adapt to the rigours and tempo of England’s top-flight.

This decision not only stems from Amrabat’s poor form but also the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo who has impressed since returning to action after a lengthy injury last month.

The 18-year-old midfielder has already been entrusted to start several big games, namely away clashes at Everton, Newcastle and Liverpool.

United legend Paul Scholes was among those to praise Mainoo’s performances, saying: ‘He looks like a player who can protect his back four, but he can also take the ball as well, he can receive the ball, he can start attacks as well – which is needed.

‘I think they’d be better having Mainoo in there as the protector, because this back four they need protecting.

‘I don’t think anybody else in the team has the legs and athleticism and quality on the ball as well and senses danger as much as this young lad.’

Fans will be hoping to see Mainoo start again over Amrabat for United’s next game – a trip to West Ham on Saturday.
