Kerala HC directs I&B Ministry to ‘immediately address the violations’ in Bigg Boss Malayalam 6
In a recent update, the Kerala High Court has instructed the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to promptly address the breaches of its advisories concerning the popular reality show, Bigg Boss Malayalam Season 6. This directive was issued by a division bench comprising Justices A Muhamed Mustaque and MA Abdul Hakhim on April 11, during the hearing of a petition lodged by Advocate Adarsh S.
The petition contended that the show had infringed upon broadcasting regulations and advisories set by the Union government, particularly through the portrayal of physical assaults. Adarsh S further urged for an immediate halt to the show’s airing on the popular channel and its removal from all social media and OTT platforms.
A division bench of justices A Muhamed Mustaque and MA Abdul Hakhim, while hearing Adarsh S’s petition, expressed serious concern over the matter. The court observed that the broadcast of such content raises significant issues and directed the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to take immediate action to address the violations.
The court’s directive includes instructions to the ministry to ensure that broadcasting regulations and advisories are strictly adhered to. If violations are found, the ministry has been instructed to instruct the relevant parties to refrain from telecasting such shows on electronic media. Additionally, the petitioner has been permitted to submit evidence of the telecasted content to support the case.
In the plea submitted by Adarsh S, it was emphasized that broadcasting violent or assaultive content without appropriate context could have detrimental effects on viewers and society as a whole. Such content has the potential to incite violence, promote aggression, and erode moral values, thereby endangering public safety and morality.
The court’s intervention has prompted notices to be issued to several parties involved, including the State Police Chief, the production house, the parent company, the channel airing the show, and the show’s host and actor, Mohanlal.
For the unversed, the petition was filed against airing the particular episode of a physical altercation between inmates Sijo John and Haseeb SK alias Asi Rocky. In the episode, Asi was seen hitting Sijo on his chin and the latter experienced a fracture. Soon after the incident, Asi got expelled from the show and Sijo was taken to the hospital for immediate surgery.
