Supriya Shrinate, who has been making news for her controversial post against actor-turned-politician and BJP’s pick from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi Kangana Ranaut, has been dropped from the Congress Lok Sabha 2024 candidate list and has been replaced by Virendra Chaudhary.
Shrinate had contested the general elections in 2019 from Maharajganj in Uttar Pradesh but lost to BJP’s Pankaj Chaudhary.
Congress released its eight list of candidates for the Lok Sabha polls 2024 on Wednesday evening and Shrinate found her name nowhere in it.
‘Asked party not to field me’
Shrinate said she had asked the Congress not to field her in the Lok Sabha elections as she wants to focus on her job as the social media head of the party, a report by NDTV quoted her as saying.
She even claimed to have suggested a candidate to replace her.
Supriya Shrinate – Kangana Ranaut controversy
Shrinate, on Monday, allegedly shared an offensive post on her Instagram account with a picture of Kangana Ranaut, which she later deleted.
The Congress spokesperson promptly clarified that several people have access to her social media accounts, and one of them made the inappropriate post.
“As soon as I came to know, I deleted that post. Everyone who knows me, also knows very well that I can never make personal and indecent comments towards any woman. I wanted to know how this happened,” she said.
“Anyone who knows me will know I would never say that for a woman. However, a parody account that I have just discovered misusing my name is being run on Twitter ( @Supriyaparody ) which started the whole mischief, and is being reported,” Shrinate added.
Several BJP leaders lashed out at the Congress party and Shrinate’s post.
Ranut said she was hurt by the post Shrinate had shared on Instagram and later deleted it.
“Every woman deserves dignity, no matter what profession she is in… The most I am hurt by is the ‘Mandi’ thing, which is known as Chota Kashi and has been the land of several Rishis,” Kangana Ranaut said.
The actor also posted on the X (formerly Twitter) tagging Shrinate, saying: “Dear Supriya ji, in the last 20 years of my career as an artist, I have played all kinds of women. From a naive girl in Queen to a seductive spy in Dhaakad, from a goddess in Manikarnika to a demon in Chandramukhi, from a prostitute in Rajjo to a revolutionary leader in Thalaivii”.
EC show-causes Shrinate
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a show-cause notice to Shrinate for “insulting, offensive and derogatory remarks against the honour and dignity of women.”
The poll body sought their response by 5 pm on March 29.
