IPL shocker: Maxwell takes indefinite break
Glenn Maxwell has opted to step away from the IPL to recharge both physically and mentally, urging the Royal Challengers Bengaluru management to field someone else in his place for the upcoming match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Maxwell’s performance in IPL 2024 has been lackluster, with just 32 runs in six innings at a dismal average of 5.33, including three ducks.
Expressing his decision after RCB’s sixth loss in seven matches, Maxwell, as cited by Cricinfo, conveyed that he approached skipper Faf du Plessis and the coaching staff, expressing his belief that it was time to give another player an opportunity. Maxwell did not play in last night’s game against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Reflecting on past experiences, Maxwell acknowledged the danger of persisting in a rut and deemed it necessary to take a break to rejuvenate himself both mentally and physically. He expressed hope that if required later in the tournament, he would return in a better state to make a meaningful contribution.
Maxwell highlighted a noticeable decline in his performance, particularly after the powerplay, an area he had excelled in during previous seasons. Recognizing his lack of positive impact with the bat and considering RCB’s position in the standings, Maxwell deemed it prudent to step aside and allow someone else to showcase their talent.
Despite entering IPL 2024 in excellent form, Maxwell attributed his struggles to the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket. Reflecting on his performances, he acknowledged instances where he made sound decisions but failed to capitalize, emphasizing the fine margins in the game and the potential consequences of a string of failures.
Coming back to last night’s match, Sunrisers Hyderabad-Royal Challengers Bengaluru achieved a remarkable feat, setting a new record for the highest aggregate score in a T20 match with a total of 549 runs. Travis Head’s blistering century, supported by a solid partnership with Abhishek Sharma, propelled SRH to a record IPL total of 287/3, the second-highest in all T20 cricket. Travis (102 off 41 balls) smashed a 39-ball hundred, and shard a 108-run stand with opener Abhishek Sharma (34) to guide former IPL champions to a record IPL total. Despite a valiant effort from Dinesh Karthik, who scored a rapid 83, RCB fell short, managing 262/7 in response.
SRH captain Pat Cummins led from the front with three crucial wickets, supported by spinner Mayank Markande’s two dismissals, as the visitors successfully defended their imposing total. The match showcased the potency of SRH’s batting lineup and exposed RCB’s weaknesses, particularly in the middle order and their bowling attack.
