India’s unemployment rate is double that of Pakistan: Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi Sunday claimed that the unemployment rate in India was double that of Pakistan, and more than that of Bhutan and Bangladesh.

“Today, there is maximum unemployment in the country in the last 40 years. India has double the unemployment as compared to Pakistan,” Gandhi said while addressing a gathering in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior as part of his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

Claiming that 23 per cent of youth were unemployed in India and 12 per cent in Pakistan, Rahul Gandhi added that India’s unemployment rate was more than that of Bhutan and Bangladesh as well.

“Why? Because Modi ji finished small businesses by implementing GST and through demonetisation,” Gandhi said.

“The reason why hatred is spreading in the country is because of injustice — economic injustice, social injustice, and injustice against farmers and youth,” Gandhi added.

According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey Annual Report 2022-2023, released by the National Sample Survey Office, India’s unemployment rate for persons aged 15 years and above was recorded at a six-year low of 3.2 per cent during July 2022-June 2023. The unemployment rate is defined as the percentage of unemployed persons in the labour force.

In Pakistan, meanwhile, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) projected the unemployment rate in 2023 at 8.5 per cent.

According to data provided by the World Bank for the year 2022, Pakistan’s unemployment rate stood at 5.6 per cent, while India’s at 4.8 per cent.
