With the Indian metro expanding its network in many cities, it is expected that they are poised to surpass the USA and become the second biggest metro network in the world in the coming years.

Recently, Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs visited Srinagar, Jammu, and Kashmir to attend the Viksit Bharat Ambassador Meetup.

During the event, the Union Minister shed light on the transformative journey of the Indian metro network in the past decade. He also talked about the country’s extensive metro network and the evolution of technology, which has connected various areas and made it possible for people to commute.

During an event in Srinagar, the Union Minister revealed that India is on a progressive track and that in the next five years, the country will be among the top three economies globally.

In terms of metro railway network operations, India is currently ranked third after China and the United States of America (USA). China has always been at the forefront of metro connections, with a network of 9,827.5 kilometres, including 47 metro systems and 281 metro lines.

The second spot belongs to the United States of America (USA), with a network of 1386.2 kilometres and 16 metro systems. The metro network of the USA is spread over 87 lines as well.

Talking about India’s metro network, even though it is still behind China and the USA, it is extensively expanding. Currently, the metro network in the country spans approximately 911.48 kilometres.

It is distributed over 17 metro systems and 38 lines. In the coming 2-3 years, the metro network in India is expected to expand approximately 950 kilometres, which will help it surpass the USA and become the second biggest metro network in the world.

According to ANI, the Union Minister, during the event in Srinagar, emphasised on the fact that the country’s development cannot happen without the progress of Kashmir.

He also talked about India’s GDP and revealed that in 170, until the Battle of Plassey, India’s share in the global GDP was 25 per cent or more. He also said that India was considered a fragile economy in 2014. Since then, our country has been considered one of the top five economies in the world.
