sarabjit murderer killed indian hand behind sarabjit singh’s murderer killing? pakistan shifts blame without proof
New Delhi: Pakistan has accused New Delhi of involvement in the killing of Sarabjit Singh’s murderer, although it has provided no evidence to support its claims. Islamabad accused India of its involvement in the targeted killing of Amir Sarfaraz, also known as Tamba, who was acquitted in the murder case of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi of Pakistan accused India of involvement in the incident, although no evidence was provided to support the claim.
Naqvi hinted at a pattern, alleging India’s role by stating that the fatal attack on Tamba by two motorcycle-borne assailants aligns with a similar modus operandi seen in other cases. “India is suspected to have been involved in four other murders (on Pakistan soil). We await the conclusion of the investigation before making further statements,” he said.
India is yet to respond to these allegations.
According to police reports, Tamba was at his residence in Lahore’s Islampura neighbourhood when the attackers arrived. They shot him at close range upon his answering the doorbell, resulting in his death in the hospital. A case has been registered against the unidentified duo based on a complaint by Tamba’s brother, Junaid Sarfraz.
The Punjab government has transferred the case to the police’s counter-terrorism department, associated with the ISI. Tamba, along with his alleged accomplice Mudasir Munir, had attacked Sarabjit Singh with bricks and iron rods at Kot Lakhpat prison in April 2013. Singh, who had been sentenced to death for espionage and orchestrating bomb attacks, was killed two months after India executed Afzal Guru, the mastermind behind the 2001 Parliament attack.
In December 2018, a sessions court in Lahore acquitted Tamba and Munir of the charges related to Singh’s murder, leading to their release as all witnesses retracted their statements. Tamba, aged 45 and unmarried, was a spice dealer believed to have close ties with Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed.
This is not the first Pakistan has accused India of conducting targeted killings in its territory. Earlier, a Guardian report alleged that India’s intelligence agency RAW had executed up to 20 targeted assassinations since the Pulwama attack in 2019. The report, based on evidence provided by Pakistan and interviews with intelligence officials from both countries, also suggested that India had adopted a policy of targeting individuals deemed hostile to the country.
