Tata Institute claims its Rs 100 tablet can prevent cancer recurrence

In what can be said as a breakthrough in cancer research and treatment, Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) has found an affordable way to stop recurrence of cancer. Currently, lakhs and crores are spent on cancer treatment and TMC doctors have found that a tablet to treat cancer can be available for just Rs 100.

The doctors found that dying cancer cells release cell-free chromatin particles after chemotherapy and radiotherapy that can turn healthy cells into cancerous ones. The study suggests the inclusion of drugs/agents that deactivate, and destroy cell-free chromatin particles released by treated, dying cancer cells.

According to the study, dying cancer cells release cell-free chromatin particles (cfChPs, or fragments of chromosomes) which can turn healthy cells into cancerous ones. Some of the cfChPs may fuse with healthy chromosomes and cause new tumors.

What are cell-free chromatin particles?

Cell-free chromatin particles refer to fragments of chromatin, the complex of DNA and proteins that makeup chromosomes, found outside of cells in bodily fluids such as blood or urine. These particles can be released into circulation through various cellular processes, including cell death, apoptosis, or necrosis. They may also originate from circulating immune cells or other sources. Cell-free chromatin particles contain genetic material and associated proteins, and their presence in bodily fluids can serve as biomarkers for various diseases, including cancer, autoimmune disorders, and inflammatory conditions, providing valuable insights into disease diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment monitoring.

When will this tablet be available for the public?

“Tata doctors were working on this tablet for almost a decade. The tablet is awaiting approval from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). TIFR scientists have applied to FSSAI to approve this tablet. After getting the approval, it will be available in the market from June-July. This tablet will help to a great extent in improving cancer treatment,” the senior cancer surgeon said in an interview with NDTV.
