India 3rd most polluted country in world, IQAir finds; 42 cities in top 50 are Indian
India was the third-most polluted country in 2023, after Bangladesh and Pakistan, according to Swiss air quality monitoring body, IQAir. However, in the top 50 most-polluted cities, 42 cities were that of India, with Begusarai topping the list.
According to the report, the concentration of pollutant PM2.5 in India was more than 10 times higher than the World Health Organizations’s guideline (annual average of 5 µg/m3 or less).
In Bangladesh, the most-polluted country in the world according to the report, the PM2.5 was 15 times higher than WHO’s guideline, and in Pakistan, it was 14 times higher.
Meanwhile, apart from Begusarai, the top five polluted cities included, India’s Guwahati (Ranked No. 2), Delhi (3), and Mullanpur (4), and Pakistan’s Lahore (5).
India’s New Delhi, Siwan, Saharsa, Goshaingaon, and Katihar featured in the top 10 most polluted cities, in that order.
