‘In deference to court…’: Lawyer Jai Dehadrai withdraws case against TMC’s Mahua Moitra

Advocate Jai Anant Dehadrai withdrew his defamation case against his former partner and Trinamool Congress (TMC) party leader Mahua Moitra for her remarks against him.

The defamation case was filed after he alleged that Moitra received cash and gifts from a businessman to ask questions in Lok Sabha, leading Moitra to make “false, abusive, and defamatory statements” about him.

On the last occasion, Justice Prateek Jalan told both parties that their public discourse had reached a “fairly low” level.

On Thursday, the court asked counsel for both parties to explore ways to halt the crossfire.

Speaking exclusively to India Today, Jai Dehadrai said that he has withdrawn his defamation suit against Ms Moitra in deference to the wise suggestion put to both sides by Justice Prateek Jalan.

Initially, Dehadrai’s counsel proposed withdrawing the suit if Moitra assured that no palpably false statements would be made against him. However, he eventually decided to withdraw it unconditionally.

During the last hearing, the court urged both parties to exercise caution and warned Moitra’s counsel of potential injunctions if objectively false statements were made.

The court also cautioned Dehadrai’s counsel that if he continued making allegations against Moitra in the public domain despite filing the case, it would balance the equities when granting any injunction. It emphasised the importance of allowing Moitra to defend herself.
