IIT Kharagpur alumnus lists annual expense for 4-member family. It's Rs 20 lakh

An Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur alumnus shared a detailed estimate of the yearly expenses of a middle-class family of four living in a metropolitan city in India. According to Pritesh Kakani, the total yearly cost for a family comes down to Rs 20 lakh, with no luxury expenses added.

Kakani’s post, which breaks down the costs from the highest to the lowest expense, has triggered a discussion on social media.

The post includes a screenshot of the expense plan he made, highlighting the various costs incurred by a family of four, ranging from house rent, travel, healthcare, education, furniture, electronics, gas, maid, tax filing, laundry and more.

The highest expense on the list is the monthly rent of Rs 35,000, followed by food expenses of Rs 10,000 and restaurant’s Rs 4,000. The cost of petrol is estimated to be Rs 5,350, while medical expenses are set at Rs 8,000. The cost of electricity and gas is estimated to be Rs 1,500 and local travel Rs 2,000.Â

Since being posted online, the video has gone viral with over 1 million views on X. A section of the pointed out that Rs 20 lakh a year amounts to living a luxurious life.
