Rohit Sharma returned to form for Mumbai Indians (MI) when he scored an unbeaten 105 off 63 deliveries against Chennai Super Kings, but it went in vain as MI fell short by 20 runs in its chase of 207. Sharma played lone ranger in the chase of 207, scoring his only second century in the Indian Premier League and hammered 11 fours and five sixes along the way.

It was also a record-breaking effort by the India captain as he became the first cricketer to score two centuries in the IPL for the Mumbai Indians. During his 105-run knock on Sunday, Rohit achieved many other batting milestones as well. He smacked five sixes, which helped him become the first Indian batter to hit 500 sixes in T20s.

But his glittering century was overshadowed by the lack of support from the other end. While Tilak Varma provided some much-needed support during a crucial 60-run partnership, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. The likes of Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav failed to contribute, leaving Rohit with too much to do single-handedly.

“Rohit Sharma batted brilliantly. He played so well against CSK. But if only somebody gave him support from the other end then the target could have been chased, but he played amazingly and scored a brilliant hundred. How much could he do alone,” Shami said in a video that was shared on Twitter.

As the match came to an end and the floodlights at the Wankhede Stadium cast long shadows, Sharma walked back to the pavilion alone. The image of Sharma’s lonely walk captured the dejection that shrouded the entire Mumbai Indians camp.

Meanwhile, Shami, the veteran pacer, is currently out of the team due to an ankle injury. He was not considered for India’s ongoing five-match Test series against England.
